Romans is the doctrinal battleground of the whole New Testament, and it is here that Wesley's own hand shows most plainly — his readings of grace and election, and the freedom he was determined to defend against the Calvinist construction of the text. First Corinthians turns from doctrine to a divided congregation and the order of its common life. The apparatus marks where he still leans on Bengel and Doddridge, and where the note is his own argument.
