Véronique

Dialogue of History and the Carnal Soul

Charles Péguy

Véronique is one of Charles Péguy's great dialogues of history — a meditation, carried between History and the carnal soul, on what it means for the past to be remembered, and on the difference between the history that is written down and the living memory carried in flesh and spirit.

This is the first English translation, by Wilson Pruitt, with the translator's preface and Marcel Péguy's 1972 notice. Péguy's prose advances by return and insistence — the repetitions that are not padding but the argument itself — and the translation is made to keep that rhythm in English.
